Recently done

(In reverse order, most recent first:)

  • upgrade to MW 1.16.1
  • upgrade to MW 1.15.2, updated most extensions Maarten 16:07, 26 March 2010 (PDT)
  • enabled video embedding
  • enabled GPX uploads
  • newly created map markers were not showing up on the map right away. took another stab at fixing this. seems to refresh automatically now. Maarten 12:13, 2 May 2007 (PDT)
  • created a "needs help" notice and category. To put a page in the category and have te box appear, just put {{Needs Help}} at the top of the page (or where you want the box to appear.)
  • added disclaimer at the top of Trail Info pages Maarten 18:12, 2 April 2007 (PDT)
  • added the My First Edit tutorial
  • fixed a bug in the login code that showed up when you logged in, then used your laptop on a different network (e.g. wifi somewhere new)

Current next steps

This is what I'm planning to fix next:

  • Editing of map markers Maarten 16:24, 16 March 2007 (PDT)

Pages that need help

If you're looking to help out, consider working on one of these pages.

The template for trail info pages (sections, etc.)

  • The sidebar for each page should mention if there's a season. (e.g. Tiger Apr 15 - Oct 15) Maarten 16:03, 16 February 2007 (PST)
  • Is there an in-page weather forecast summary we can embed? Ideally from a source that has forecasts that are localized enough to be meaningful for the places where we ride, e.g. from NWS/NOAA? (If anyone can research how to do this...?) Maarten 09:24, 5 April 2007 (PDT)
    • Maybe you could key this forecast off the zip code in the info template?

The Google Maps integration

Suggestions

  • add topo map layer support to the maps. (As seen on the WTA trail damage maps.)
  • The AddMapMarker form accepts only decimal lat/long values, not degrees + minutes. This may be a problem for people who look up the coordinates elsewhere. Should minimally have a note about this and suggest how to convert. Ideally, accept both, either by having separate text entry boxes or by having the smarts built in. Maarten 15:14, 24 March 2007 (PDT)
  • There's no way to delete map markers yet. There's no way to edit or move a marker. Maarten 16:04, 16 February 2007 (PST)

Known Issues

  • The maps sometimes load slowly or tiles will be missing, or marked "sorry, we don't have coverage at this level". That's Google being slow or flaky, there's nothing we can do about it. Tester4 16:46, 16 February 2007 (PST)
  • Sometimes the site will give you errors from Google saying The Google maps API key used on this website was registered for a different web site. and In order to see the map that would go in this space, you will need to use a compatible web browser. When you see this, try following this link and see if that makes it go away.

MediaWiki

Bugs

  • Updating image files that have previously been uploaded. I "updated" the following image: [File:Saint-Helens-bike-trails.jpg]. The new image now displays improperly - any thumbnails and downsized verzions get errors. The full size image displays fine. Justin 12:37, 25 October 2007 (PDT)
  • (Minor) Title of page shown in browser window title bar should not include "Main Page" when the user is on that page; window title should be the wiki's name. Maarten 09:26, 5 April 2007 (PDT)
  • I was logged off the site because I cleared my cookies and then I tried to add a new trail. Got an error saying I needed to be logged on. It took me to the outdated Wiki login page, which didn't work since I should have been taken to the Drupal login page. Justin 14:32, 18 April 2007 (PDT)
  • I've uploaded a few trail photos no problem, but failed at various other attempts, even when doing exactly the same thing. The browser just hangs and spins as if it is processing, but never goes anywhere, even after hours of waiting! I'm on a Mac. Tried Safari and Firefox. Same result. Tried from two different computers/locations. Seems to be a server-side issue. The photos are well within size requirements, and are JPG format. Shouldn't be a problem. Other Stuff

  • I forgot to mention that I learned the "load a GPX file in Google Maps" trick below from Randy over at Warm Showers. The Duthie Hill example contains only waypoints, but the GPX trick displays routes as well. Keithmo 15:18, 26 March 2010 (PDT)
  • I noticed on the Duthie Hill page instructions for downloading & viewing GPX files. Here's a tip: You can load a GPX file directly in Google Maps by using a URL in the Search box. Once that's done, you can have Google Maps generate a link directly to a map view incorporating the GPX data. Here's an example. Keithmo 10:09, 26 March 2010 (PDT)
  • The Drupal sign in process is confusing for some users. We need to add language making it brutally clear that they must create a new account. Justin 10:30, 27 February 2007 (PST)
